Farm holidays in England

Enjoy a farm holiday in the glorious English countryside.

There are so many very beautiful places that it is difficult to choose. Sometimes it is easier to search for Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and stay in a farm cottage there because these AONB are recognised as especially attractive.

Farm holidays in English National parks are another option.

Then there are those lovely rural counties of Somerset, Devon and Dorset with hills and a coastline. Days out on a beach beckon during your farm holiday.

Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire offer quiet country lanes, farming country, market towns and farmer's markets. See hops being grown in Herefordshire, apple orchards in Worcestershire. Both of these are also grown in Kent, in the east of England, although Kent is somewhat busier than the west and known as the 'garden of England' for good reason.

The Cotswolds, Gloucestershire and Suffolk are another good choice if you would like to tour pretty villages and see historical buildings and churches.

Farm cottage holidays in Norfolk are set in flat landscapes with plenty of cycleways for safe cycling with the children. Leicestershire and Lincolnshire also fall into this category. Lincolnshire grows a large number of vegetables for the British market; brassicas, potatoes, lettuce, broccoli and butternut squash.

The Channel Islands also grow food for British tables. Homegrown kiwi fruits, strawberries and salad vegetables provide early crops. A farm holiday in the Channel Islands also means that you will always be within easy distance of the sea - the best of both worlds.

Go north in England for rugged countryside and hills. The Yorkshire Dales and Moors provide great places to walk where streams and brooks tumble down valleys and there are sheep scattered over the fields.

Besides the usual types of farms, one sometimes comes across farms specialising in growing herbs, lavender or bulbs. A holiday on a lavender farm must be divine when all that lavender is in flower.

Sometimes it is possible to purchase fresh farm produce directly from the farmer, eggs, organic meat, milk and whatever else is produced.
