Dreaming of a country life

country cottages Isle of Wight to ent for self catering holidaysI used to dream of a stone country cottage with wooden window frames and a lovely natural cottage garden where rambling roses grew in a haphazard but pleasing fashion around the door and blue pendules of wisteria adorned the walls each May. It would have been wonderful to wake up to views of fields and woodland every morning, to see the cows munching grass contentendly in the fields and everything to be right with the world. That was the vision.

As time went on, property prices, especially in lovely rural areas such as the Cotswolds or Herefordshire, went through the roof that the dream became unattainable. And now that I am facing old age, the prospect of living miles away from amenities and hospitals makes the dream unrealistic.

I can still satisfy those country cravings by renting someone else’s country cottages for a week or two and making the most of the countryside whilst I’m there. One advantage of renting for a self catering break rather than owning that cottage is that I can stay in a different location each time. We are so very fortunate to have such splendid countryside and scenery throughout the UK and Ireland – we are spoilt for choice.  I have a trip to the Isle of Wight in mind for next summer. Apparently, the interior of the Isle of Wight is a veritable nature reserve with plenty of cycle paths. Now, that does appeal to me.  All I need to do is to find a suitable farm cottage on the Isle of Wight and look forward to a week of gentle rambles with my camera, taking in those rural views and capturing images of wild flowers, peculiar wild beasties and lots of pretty country cottages.

Life is good.
